Hugo Chavez Frias is the original president of Venezuela, having been elected in 1998 following a serial of electoral victories which took place in a country with stinting chaos and political instability. There were many factors contributing to Chavezs victory. He was charismatic, populist - he caught the attention to the poor promising wealth and equality for all - and different to every other candidate, or so it seemed at the time.
