The fiction of The Giver takes place in a blank, emotionless, pale world where people go on about their lives modify solely to the community. People ar assigned a lying-in by the Council of Elders once they reach the age of twelve and are wherefore submitted to gentility until they are capable enough to go on their own. Jonas, a peculiar boy is assigned to be the next Receiver of Memories, a prestigous position within the society. When he meets up with the one who is to train him, he finds a weak, archaic man. This old man asks Jonas to refer him as the Giver. Jonas training consist of the Giver showing him memories of the world before the monotony. Through this training is where he expiriences joy, pain, love, fear, among other emotions via the memories shown by the Giver. Jonas then begins questioning why did the community decide to hide away(p) these memories and finds out that because of these memories, people are more likely to not accomplish their tasks.

Outraged, Jonas decides to leave his home, thus, releasing all the memories onto the community with the process of the Giver. Jonas then escapes the city with Gabriel, an infant whom he became attached to during the weeks of his training. Jonas and Gabriel give way the heat and cold during their trek in hopes of reaching Elsewhere, a mysterious place far away from the community. Jonas then finds a bobsled on top of a mountain of carbon and climbs aboard with Gabriel. As they slide down the hill, Jonas can mold lights in the distance and they sound of music, a first for him.
