The Landscape both shapes the mass of Cape Breton as good as limits their futures.

Living on the island of Cape Breton, the characters in Island argon forced into a certain mood of life. The lack of edition in job opportunities as well as family traditions restricts people from making their own way in the world, rather financial support as clans, as a whole. Although the land has such a fundamental effect on the characters, MacLeod in addition uses symbolism of characters emotions and reflects them onto the landscape. In this way the Landscape is both shaping and world molded by the characters in it.

Island explores the effects on people of sustainment in an almost entirely isolated island. This isolation brings approximately a certain sense of community amongst friends and mainly family, the certificate of indebtedness for members to support each other going unquestioned. For the younger characters however, the isolation and monotonous drudgery of life on the island is oppressive and they endeavour to leave behind this grimy Cape Breton…whose prisoner [they] suffer been. For many of the older characters of the book, remaining on the island is their only way of preserving their lives as they knew them as well as preserving the clan which is fundamental. …it seems that we dissolve only stay forever if we stay right here.
