It
may sound easy when someone tells you to describe yourself in a few
words. Equally hard is the requirement to write a personal statement
about oneself, especially the first time. The confusion arises
because for one, not many people know what a personal statement is
and it therefore follows that one cannot write a personal statement
if they have not the slightest idea what a personal statement
entails.
A personal statement is just that, it is a brief summary of
a person; their personal details as well as academic and professional
competencies. I didn’t know anything about a personal statement
some eight years ago. I remember I had gone consulting some essay
help on some essay topics that he had given us to write about. To me
the essay topics had all looked perfect and I couldn’t make up my
mind which of the essay topics to choose. Before he could assist me
sort out the essay topics, my lecturer asked me what my hobbies were.
At first, I couldn’t connect between essay topics and hobbies, but
he urged me on. I then realized that it was very possible and very
rewarding if one considered choosing essay topics that are closely
related to one’s hobby, because generally these essay topics would
be tackled with deeper fondness. To my amazement, I didn’t know
what my hobby was then, which then prompted my lecturer to ask me
whether I hadn’t stated that in my personal statement? I must say
that day was a double learning experience for me; I was able to
select one out of several essay topics, besides knowing what a
personal statement was.
