Since Americans could not fully exterminate the Native American population, they fought hard to purge them of their tribal elbow rooms, while Americans were taught to be proud of their country and to love and treasure the American flag. The comparable was not expected of Indians towards their own culture. Indians should be able to respect their culture and traditions as Americans do. They should be allowed the same civil dear to learn their history and maintain what they have left of Indian culture. In the late 19th century, the U.S. government rapidly expanded the American school system, through free public schools and universities. In efforts to tame the Indians, Americans focused on educating them as well, they felt that was the only way to uplift the tribes and have them adapt to vacuous society. Richard Henry Pratt, the drawing card of the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, declared citizenize them, in a public lecture he made to reformers in 1892 (Johnson 37).



At that time white reformers considered the Indians savages, which could only benefit from reform and had to be taught the ways of the whites. Pratts slogan was Kill the Indian in him, and save the humanness (Johnson 37). Pratt argued that oppressed black men, even though they were germs of human liberty were able to assimilate into American society and the Germans came into our country and communities, and divided our customs, our civilizations, to be fit of it, and the result and immediate success.
